5 Effective Time Management Techniques for Startups
In a startup, every second can be the difference between meeting deadlines and falling short. Time is our most valuable, non-recoverable resource — so work smart, not just hard (burnout helps no one). Here are five techniques we recommend.
1. The Eisenhower Matrix
Prioritise tasks by urgency and importance across four quadrants: do now (urgent + important), schedule (important, not urgent), delegate or outsource (urgent, not important), and eliminate. It filters the noise so you focus on what matters — keep to ~8 tasks per quadrant.
2. Pomodoro technique
Work in focused 25-minute sprints with 5-minute breaks; after four, take a longer 15–30 minute break. Great for beating procrastination and, in development, for tight coding sprints.
3. Pareto Principle (80/20)
Roughly 20% of inputs drive 80% of results — 20% of code delivers 80% of value. Prioritise the high-leverage 20% and work backwards to finish tasks faster.
4. Eat the frog
Do your hardest, most important task first thing in the morning. Getting it out of the way builds momentum and a sense of accomplishment for the rest of the day.
5. Stop multitasking, start automating
Give each task your undivided attention — switching contexts kills focus. Automate or delegate minor tasks (IFTTT, Zapier) and make sure your tools work for you. Slow and steady, one priority at a time.
