The project-management methodology you choose dictates how the rest of the project performs. There’s no one-size-fits-all — each has its own rules, pros and cons. The goal is to maximise efficiency and reduce wasted time and resources, so define your project’s requirements and goals first.

Waterfall

The first modern approach — a linear, step-by-step process (requirements, design, development, testing, maintenance). Each stage finishes before the next. Best for long-time-frame projects that need tight control and predictability.

Agile

The opposite of Waterfall: iteration and flexibility over rigid planning, working in 2–4 week sprints that deliver a draft for customer feedback, then repeat. Its manifesto values individuals, working software, collaboration and responding to change. Ideal when quick communication is possible and requirements evolve.

Lean

Adapted from Lean manufacturing: eliminate waste, build quality in, create knowledge, defer commitment, deliver fast, respect people and optimise the whole. It focuses only on what adds value to the customer and improves flow.

Scrum

A popular Agile framework with fixed roles (product owner, development team, Scrum Master) and rituals — including a 15-minute daily standup. Great for new projects with little maintenance, where the team ships a working feature each sprint.

Kanban

A visual board (backlog → in progress → done) with cards for each task. Fluid, flexible and easy to grasp at a glance — often run in Trello. Best when other methodologies are too rigid.

How we choose

At ScaleTech we mix Scrum and Kanban — the cyclical Agile rhythm of Scrum with Kanban’s workflow visualisation — which lets us and our clients see project status at a glance. We built Workglue with Kanban, and Getch and Notis with Scrum. Define your requirements, time-frame, team size and expected rate of change, then pick accordingly — and stay ready to adapt.
